Boom Beach combines the best of both single-player campaigns and multiplayer ones. You can play on your own, but you also have the opportunity to attack other players on the world map. The map is expansive and it expands along with your progress in the game. The storyline pits each player against the villain in the game called The Blackguard, a military force invading the archipelago who also enslaves the locals for their valuable Power Stones found in the area. Those Power Stones can also be used by players to build buff-providing statues.

The Blackguard is computer-generated, as well as their bases and will appear on the map. You can destroy them for resources. Destroy them to stop their evil goals. There are other resource bases which can be used to improve resource generation when seized and multiple players can contest them.


The Blackguard’s representation often includes the Lt. Hammerman who is a commander running several fortified headquarters which are the primary objective in the game. He will occasionally launch attacks on players when they pass certain levels. There are other computer-generated enemies, including Dr. T and Colonel Gearheart, who are both Blackguard members who run special bases that will occasionally appear in the game as events. Other players in the game will also appear on the map as Blackguard mercenaries and you will get the chance to attack them, as they will attack you.


When you are battling an enemy base, you can command the gunboat which will have a starting amount of “energy” (improve it through upgrades). Also, there will be landing crafts which can house your troops. You can deploy your troops on the island’s beaches and they will automatically search for and attack nearby enemy targets. Also, by spending the boat’s energy, you can provide troops with support, including flares to direct their movement or bombardments to cripple the enemy defenses. The goal of the attack is to destroy the enemy’s headquarters since that ruins the whole base with it and gets you instant victory and plenty of resources. However, if you fail to destroy the headquarters it counts as a loss and you get no resources.
